Triumph stands tall among the most iconic motorcycle manufacturers, boasting a diverse lineup that caters to a wide spectrum of riders. From raw naked streetfighters to high-performance sportbikes, retro-styled roadsters, and versatile adventure bikes, Triumph's range is expansive. Historically, the brand has been synonymous with the three-cylinder engine, a hallmark seen across models like the Street and Speed Triples, Trident, Tiger Sport 660, and the revered Tiger adventure series.
Amidst this lineup, the Tiger 900 holds a unique status, often overshadowed in the adventure bike realm by twin-cylinder counterparts from Ducati and BMW. Yet, the Tiger 900, especially in its GT Pro variant tailored for on-road long-distance journeys, is an underrated gem. It beckons exploration, inviting a closer look at its offerings and the distinctive niche it carves within the ADV landscape.
First impressions
The Tiger 900 GT Pro commands attention with its imposing and sizeable presence, exuding an intimidating allure that speaks of robustness and strength on the road. Yet, as you mount the bike, it surprisingly reveals its approachable nature. Despite the initial impression of a lofty seat due to its long-travel suspension, a shift in weight dispels this notion, making it more easily reachable.
Its adventurous essence is unmistakable in the design language, characterized by sharp angles and a tall windscreen. The bike boasts a distinctive profile with a 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheel, complemented by upswept exhausts and integrated handguards, solidifying its purposeful and rugged appearance. This blend of commanding presence and accessible ergonomics sets the stage for a thrilling riding experience.
A different flavor of triple
Most inline-three cylinder bikes such as the Speed Triple, Street Triple, and Trident 660 boast a 120-degree crankshaft, ensuring a smooth, linear power delivery and a refined sound. However, the Tiger 900 and its larger sibling, the Tiger 1200, take a distinctive approach with a T-Plane configuration featuring an effective 270-degree setup. Achieving this involves altering the angle of the third cylinder to 180 degrees, resulting in an irregular firing order that grants the Tiger 900 enhanced low-end torque, a boon for off-road adventures and long highway rides.
This configuration contributes to the Tiger 900's admirable performance, boasting 106 hp and 90 Nm of torque. It's equipped with multipoint sequential electronic fuel injection and electronic throttle control, along with a stainless steel 3-into-1 header system coupled with a side-mounted stainless steel silencer. The six-speed manual transmission incorporates a slipper clutch, ensuring a refined and controlled ride across various terrains and conditions.
Lots of technology to get you going
The latest updates across the range introduce a suite of active safety features aimed at elevating overall capability. Enhanced braking systems offer better control and reduced stopping distances, accompanied by a novel emergency deceleration warning system. This innovative feature automatically triggers hazard lights during rapid braking, reverting to normal function upon resuming movement.
The introduction of new marker lights significantly enhances visibility, especially in low-light conditions, contributing to a more pronounced silhouette. Additionally, the revamped range showcases a 7-inch TFT instrument panel featuring updated graphics and menu systems, accompanied by a USB-C cockpit charger. Moreover, My Triumph Bluetooth connectivity comes standard across all models, fostering seamless integration.
Noteworthy enhancements include optimized cornering ABS and traction control integrated with an IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit). The range offers up to six riding modes, spanning Road, Rain, Sport, and Off-Road, with Rider Configurable modes available for GT Pro and Rally Pro variants, while Off-Road Pro is exclusive to the Rally Pro. The entire lighting system is LED-based, featuring signature DRL headlights and a compact yet efficient taillight, embodying a blend of safety and modern aesthetics.
Comfortable yet engaging
The Tiger 900 GT Pro epitomizes the essence of long-distance riding, boasting upright ergonomics with a tall handlebar and a comfortable seat. Its wide bar offers ample leverage, facilitating confident maneuvers on twisty roads and occasional gravel trails. Despite its impressive performance, the bike exhibits a refined demeanor at lower speeds, ensuring ease of control.
Unlike the Street Triple or Speed Triple, the Tiger 900 isn't keen on being pushed to its limits. Instead, it thrives within mid-range revs, where the bulk of its power and torque reside. This well-mannered approach doesn't diminish its capability; rather, it excels in providing a punchy response, allowing for brisk acceleration while maintaining composure and control. It's a machine that's poised yet possesses the vigor to engage in spirited rides when the throttle beckons.
The verdict
For thrill-seekers focused solely on performance, the Tiger 900 GT Pro might not hit the mark. However, for those seeking a versatile machine catering to diverse riding styles, it's an ideal choice. Offering a balanced blend of technology and performance, it strikes a harmonious chord.
