Yamaha updates the Tricity 125 and 155 in Japan
Could the updated version of this quirky three-wheeled scooter make its way to the Philippines?
The Yamaha Niken, a potent three-wheeled tourer with the same engine as the MT-09, may be well known to many of you. In fact, a peculiar, three-wheeled scooter called the Yamaha Tricity shares parts of this technology and even predates the Niken by a few years (it was launched in 2014). Nearly ten years after its introduction, the Yamaha Tricity has undergone a full inside and exterior renovation. The 2023 model has been launched in Japan in two versions, a 125cc beginner-friendly model, and a premium 155cc variant.
The Tricity has been overhauled with new bodywork, giving the scooter a much sportier appearance. The scooter has an aggressive, forward-leaning attitude thanks to its angular front fairing, which is bulbous and swoops over the two front wheels. It transitions to a more conventional scooter form with a flat floorboard in the center. The scooter adopts a modern look at the back, yet it does so in a way that doesn't overtly differ from the appearance of other scooters.
Aside from the bodywork, Yamaha packed the Tricity 2023 with a ton of new technology. It includes a Smart Motor Generator as a start, which does away with the requirement for a typical reduction starter and creates a lighter, more compact, and quieter starting mechanism. In addition, the new Tricity has an idle stop system that turns the engine off automatically when the vehicle is stopped in traffic for a certain amount of time for improved efficiency while commuting in the city. A new digital instrument panel with Yamaha's Motorcycle Connect system, which enables you to monitor SMS and call alerts and utilize your smartphone as an auxiliary instrument panel, rounds off the new technological features. Yamaha has equipped the Tricity with a smart key system, as well. Of course, the upgraded scooter has LED lights up front and back for better visibility.
The Yamaha Tricity 125 comes equipped with a 124cc, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected, single-cylinder engine. In contrast, the Tricity 155 uses a larger, more powerful engine. The Tricity 155 has a 155cc, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected, single-cylinder motor tuned for a maximum output of 14.8 horsepower and 10.6 lb-ft of torque. It is similar in construction to other well-known Yamaha scooters such the NMAX 155, as well as the XSR155, MT-15, and YZF-R15. At present, the new Yamaha Tricity is available only in Japan. However, give that the model also proved to be rather popular in the local market in previous years, chances are the updated model will make its way to the local market sooner or later.
