Yamaha pulls the covers off the 2022 TMAX and TMAX Tech Max
Here’s what we can expect from Team Blue’s new flagship maxi-scooter.
The Yamaha NMAX 155 has long asserted its dominance in the local small-displacement maxi-scooter segment. With its competition from both Japanese and Taiwanese manufacturers not quite stacking up against the NMAX, it’s safe to say that the NMAX is the undisputed king of small-displacement maxi-scooters in the Philippines. However, did you know that the NMAX, as well as its bigger brother the XMAX, were derived from Yamaha’s first and biggest maxi-scooter, the TMAX?
While the TMAX has enjoyed rather respectable sales in the local market, it simply hasn’t sold as well as the NMAX and XMAX, despite the two smaller scooters missing out on expressway legality. That said, Yamaha has just recently released the 2022 TMAX in Europe, and all we can say is that it’s very impressive. For 2022, the new TMAX sports revised styling, and a striking colorway that pays homage to the first generation TMAX released in 2001. For starters, the new scooter now gets sharp, redesigned bodywork which brings out its sporty nature. On top of that, it gets a revised fascia which is highlighted by a menacing pair of LED headlights with matching air intakes underneath. This gives the TMAX aggressive, insectoid styling, almost similar to what we find in Yamaha’s MT range of naked bikes.
From a performance perspective, the 2022 TMAX packs quite a punch with a Euro 5-compliant, 560cc, parallel-twin motor. With 47.5 horsepower on tap, the TMAX is sure to be a highway cruiser that’s more than capable of going the distance in style and comfort. To complement this powerful engine, Yamaha has revised the TMAX’s ergonomics with slightly lower bars making for a sportier riding position. It retains its tall windscreen and wide bodywork at the front apron for added wind protection when traveling at speed.
As far as tech is concerned, the 2022 Yamaha TMAX gets a new 7-inch, full-color, TFT display. Just like most premium big bikes of today, it features Bluetooth smartphone connectivity and WiFi compatibility. A waterproof smartphone compartment at the front apron boasts a USB charging port for added convenience. The top of the line TMAX Tech Max further ups the ante in terms of premium features as it boasts an electronically adjustable windscreen, heated seats and grips, built-in cruise control, and backlit hand controls. Furthermore, it features more premium materials on the saddle, front apron, switchgear, and instrument cluster.
The new 2022 TMAX and TMAX Tech MAx are expected to enter the European market in March, 2022. Whether or not the new generation TMAX will make it to the Philippine market remains to be seen. However, it’s clear that, given the popularity of maxi-scooters such as the BMW C 400 GT and Kymco Xciting 400, there is certainly a market for premium, high-capacity maxi-scooters over here.
