Electrification is inevitable, and it’s reshaping the car and motorcycle world at a rapid pace. While some might resist, the trend is clear: big names like Harley-Davidson and Honda are slowly going electric. Kawasaki recently launched electric versions of its Ninja and Z bikes, and Yamaha and Triumph have also dabbled in EVs.

Now, Suzuki is making waves by patenting an electric motorcycle, possibly based on its popular RM-Z motocross bike.

Off-road riding is booming in the Philippines, with more enthusiasts hitting the trails. The arrival of electric dirt bikes, especially from a well-known brand like Suzuki, could attract even more riders. These bikes offer the thrill of off-roading with the benefits of electric power: less noise, instant torque, and simpler maintenance.

Suzuki’s recent patent, titled “Power Unit,” hints at exciting developments. The patent doesn’t specify the bike’s platform, battery, or motor output. Instead, it focuses on the transmission, which uses a series of gears to reduce the final drive before reaching the front sprocket. This setup enhances control and acceleration, while keeping the powertrain compact and lightweight.

Interestingly, Suzuki’s design places the front sprocket closer to the bike’s centerline than the motor’s output gear. This allows Suzuki to maintain the RM-Z’s chain position and anti-squat properties, meaning the swingarm and rear wheel design from the ICE model can be used in the electric version.

Why is this important? Well, Suzuki is creating an electric motocross bike that mirrors its gas-powered counterpart, a move previously seen only from aftermarket specialists. By leveraging an existing platform, Suzuki can develop the bike faster and at a lower cost, potentially leading to a more affordable product.

As off-road riding gains popularity all over the world—as well as in the Philippines, Suzuki’s move into electric motocross could be a game-changer, making the sport more accessible and appealing to a broader audience.
