PMVICs now optional and more affordable

Would you still opt to have your motorcycle inspected in a PMVIC?

The latest news on the highly controversial MVIS, or Motor Vehicle Inspection System, came to us in the form of a Senate Committee unanimously calling for the suspension of the highly flawed system. However, a recent development in the whole fiasco has seen not the suspension of Private Motor Vehicle Inspection Centers, or PMVICs, but rather a drastic change in the way these inspection centers are operated.

The Department of Transportation, or DOTr, has appealed to owners and operators of PMVICs to adjust their inspection fees to be more at par with those of the Private Emission Testing Centers, or PETCs, which the motoring public has become accustomed to for the past decades. In line with this, the Vehicle Inspection Center Operators Association of the Philippines, or VICOAP, a unified body consisting of PMVIC owners and operators, has agreed to lower their inspection fees to match that of an emission test of a PETC. Additionally, the reinspection fee for vehicles which fail the inspection has been waived all together. That being said, the new inspection fees are as follows:

  • Light vehicles with gross weight of up to 4,500 kg - P600.00
  • Motorcycles - P500
  • Public Utility Jeepneys - P300

Another interesting turn of events as far as the whole MVIS story is concerned, is the fact that car and motorcycle owners are no longer required to have their vehicles inspected by a PMVIC. Instead, they may opt to return to the PETCs which they have become accustomed to for so long. In a statement during an online meeting regarding the matter, DOTr assistant secretary, Atty. Giovanni Lopez stated, “Ang ating pong mga motorista ngayon ay maari na pong pumunta sa mga PETC [private emission testing centers] at saka sa PMVICs para lang po sa pagre-rehistro ng kanilang mga sasakyan." (Motorists now have the option to go to either PETCs or PMVICs to attend to their vehicle registration).
