German motorcycle show Intermot cancels its scheduled 2020 event
In the interest of public health and safety, Intermot is going digital for 2020 instead.
Intermot, one of the biggest motorcycle shows scheduled this year has just been canceled. This came as an official announcement by its organizers which was originally scheduled to be held on October 6 to 11, 2020. Instead, they’re preparing to implement a digital format for this year’s show which is scheduled to be held sometime towards the end of the year.
The organizers stressed that spatial proximity within the venue with its exhibitors forms part and parcel of the whole experience of the Intermot show. While restrictions towards social distancing have generally been easing all over the world the organizers of the event still want to stay on the side of caution. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) still has implemented specifications and restrictions on which the organizers feel that the goal of the event would not be achieved with the current measures in place. In addition, the organizers wouldn’t feel comfortable impeding the exhibitor’s economic resources considering it is already taking a heavy strain out of the global pandemic brought about by COVID-19. The decision was made after conferring with a number of key players in the industry with the health of the exhibitors and visitors being put as the main priority in reaching the said decision.
An event that depends on its appeal as an experience and event cannot be held in this form at this point in time and thus does not meet the expectations and needs of the industry.
Intermot’s organizers, the German Motorcycle Industry Association (IVM), and Koelnmesse GmbH are now putting efforts in preparation for a fully digital trade fair and to incorporate hybrid elements to supplement the onsite experience attendees would normally have within the venue.

Intermot has been known to include several world premières of up and coming motorcycles that would be scheduled for the following year. Thus, even with the migration of Intermot into a digital format, we can still expect a host of new motorcycles slated for the 2021 model lineup to be premiered by the digital show.
